Human Agency
Human agency concerns our ability to act, make choices, and influence what happens in our lives. It shapes how we pursue goals, respond to circumstances, develop capabilities, and participate in the world around us.
Yet our ability to act does not exist independently of the conditions in which we live. Our choices and actions are influenced by the resources available to us, the constraints we encounter, our understanding of a situation, and our ability to influence its outcomes.
Understanding human agency therefore involves examining both the individual and the conditions within which that individual acts.
People can have the freedom to make a choice without having the practical ability to realise it. Conversely, constraints do not necessarily eliminate agency; they can also shape the possibilities through which people act.
Our experience of agency may therefore differ from our formal freedom to choose. We might be able to make a decision but lack the resources to implement it, or take action without being able to predict or influence the outcome.
These distinctions raise questions about what agency consists of, how it is experienced, and which conditions enable or constrain its exercise.
The Frame Continuum is interested in understanding human agency as a fundamental aspect of how people navigate and shape their lives.
We want to investigate the relationship between agency, the conditions within which people act, and their ability to influence outcomes that matter to them. This includes exploring how agency relates to human flourishing, and how the structures surrounding an individual can expand or restrict the possibilities available to them.
The aim is to understand agency beyond the simple presence or absence of choice, examining the conditions under which people can meaningfully act, adapt, and shape their circumstances.
- What constitutes human agency, and how does it differ from the ability to make choices?
- What conditions enable people to exercise agency?
- How do constraints shape the possibilities available to an individual?
- What is the relationship between a person's actions and their ability to influence outcomes?
- How does an individual's understanding of a situation affect their capacity to act?
- How does the experience and exercise of agency contribute to human flourishing?
- What happens when people retain the freedom to choose but lose the practical ability to influence outcomes that matter to them?
This topic connects with several areas of research and interest at The Frame Continuum:
STCFΦ
Investigating how the configurations and conditions of a system relate to its functional possibilities.
Invariants
Exploring what persists as a system's state, configuration, or conditions change, potentially including aspects of human agency that remain consistent through changing circumstances.
Metanomics
Examining how the structures through which people understand situations shape what they perceive, question, and decide.
This page examines human agency as a phenomenon in its own right: what it is, what enables or constrains it, and how it relates to human flourishing. AI and Human Co-Existence examines a particular context in which agency may be affected by structural change. The two topics are connected, but they address different questions.
