Research
The Frame Continuum investigates the structures through which complex systems are understood, explained, and acted upon.
Our research explores questions that arise when familiar explanations are no longer sufficient: What persists beneath change? How do configurations produce patterns? At what resolution does a pattern become a different kind of system? How do our descriptions of reality relate to the structures they describe?
Our research programmes investigate these questions from different perspectives. Some remain exploratory, while others are developing into analytical frameworks and methods.
STCFΦ
STCFΦ investigates how complex systems can be represented through their structural configuration and the functional variance that arises from changing conditions.
The research examines systems in terms of State, Relations, Constraints, and Flows (STCF), and investigates how different configurations of these elements generate different functional possibilities.
The Φ component concerns the interpretation of functional variance produced by condition-dependent STCF configurations.
The research is exploring whether this provides a useful structural basis for analysing complex systems without reducing them to isolated variables or predefined explanations.
Status: Exploratory research
Invariants
Invariants investigates what persists within a system as its state, configuration, or conditions change.
The research examines whether identifying what remains structurally consistent through change can reveal relationships or properties that are obscured by variation.
It explores how such invariants can support an understanding of systems that extends beyond their changing states and observable properties.
Status: Exploratory research
Resolution Layers
Resolution Layers investigates how the structures and patterns of a system change in significance when examined at different levels of resolution.
The research explores how phenomena that appear as properties at one resolution can become structures, components, or conditions at another, and how changes in resolution affect what can be observed, explained, and acted upon.
The work examines the relationships between levels of organisation and the conditions under which a new resolution layer emerges.

Structural Truth
Structural Truth investigates the distinction between the structures that exist within a system and the explanations used to represent them.
The research examines how conceptual models, descriptions, and categories can obscure or distort the structures they are intended to explain.
It explores how structural distinctions can be preserved when moving between observation, representation, and explanation.

Metanomics
The Metanomics research programme investigates the structures and conditions underlying complex systems and patterns, developing concepts, analytical methods, and frameworks for understanding their behaviour.
Its research examines how structures and conditions shape patterns in complex systems, including those involved in human interpretation, reasoning, and action. It also investigates the epistemological and ontological questions involved in understanding and representing these structures.
The resulting work contributes to the development of Metanomics as an analytical framework within The Frame Continuum.
Status: Developing framework
Research at The Frame Continuum does not begin with the assumption that every idea should become a framework.
Research programmes investigate recurring structures, test distinctions, and develop analytical representations. Their explanatory and practical value determines whether further development is warranted.
Where appropriate, research outputs may develop into frameworks, analytical methods, diagnostics, applications, or tools.
